Improving Flexibility

When You Think About Becoming More Flexible, What Comes to Your Mind?

Is it feeling like you can move easily without hurting yourself?

Is it swinging a club or a racquet with more ease and comfort?

Is it feeling less restricted when you want to do active things?

Is it having muscles that feel loose and light?

On a technical level, flexibility is essentially how far, how well, how easily, how quickly and how comfortably we can move our body in various ways.  If we feel flexible and able to move our body the way we want to, we feel more freedom to do what we love to do.

Simply put, flexibility = freedom.

When we lose this freedom however, even simple things can become a challenge.  If it keeps getting worse, our life can eventually feel dominated by pain and a fear of hurting ourselves worse.  This can lead to a significant decrease in our enjoyment of life.

Hopefully you haven’t gotten to that point, but even if you have, there is hope.

What many people don’t realize is that their muscle system helps maintain their flexibility.  Every movement you do is performed by your muscles.  Because of this, if your muscles are not working as well as they should, you cannot move well and do what you love to do.

Over the years, I’ve worked one on one with over 600 clients and some of the movements that have been problematic for them include..

  • Swinging a club or a racquet
  • Walking, running or lifting weights
  • Picking up or playing with kids/grand kids
  • Doing house work or yard work
  • Dancing
  • Snuggling
  • Swinging a baseball bat
  • Throwing a baseball
  • Bending
  • Twisting
  • Reaching overhead
  • Reaching behind the back
  • Going up or down stairs
  • Sleeping in a preferred position
  • Sitting or standing for long periods

Just to name a few….

What movements do you love to do that are getting difficult, painful or frightening?
