The Exercise Cure

I just read the most fascinating article I’ve seen in quite a while.

It came from this week’s issue of Time Magazine and it is entitled: The Exercise Cure.

It is pretty much a summation of some of the proven and documented physiological benefits of exercising the proper way and in the correct dosage. There are also interview excerpts from physicians of different disciplines who are weighing in how powerful exercise has been for their patients.

The basic takeaway is that exercise is the best “medicine” for any physical or mental issue there is and it can give you pretty much any physical or mental benefit you could possibly be looking for if done consistently enough- up to and including slowing down aging!

Here are a few choice excerpts from the article-

“If there was a drug that could do for human health everything that exercise can, it would be the most valuable pharmaceutical ever developed”

{lack of exercise} “can worsen arthritis symptoms, increase lower back pain and lead to depression and anxiety”

“The most effective therapy available to my patients right now is exercise”

“Recent research links exercise to less depression, better memory and quicker learning.  Studies also suggest that it is the best way to prevent Alzheimer’s, which is second only to cancer as the disease American fear most..”

“I always tell people that exercise is regenerative medicine-restoring and repairing and basically fixing things that are broken..”

“A small new study suggests that moderate-intensity exercise may slow down the aging of cells.”

“If I could get them to do it {exercise} on a regular basis- even just walking…I would see dramatic improvements in their chronic disease, not mention all these other things like depression, anxiety, mood and energy levels.”

I have a full PDF of the article that you can download and read by clicking the link below.

I feel so blessed after reading this to be in the profession that I am.  I help overcome physical limitations that keep them from exercising and being active and then help them implement the optimal amounts and types exercise into their lives.

Knowing that I am helping people do the best thing they could possibly do for their body and brain is a pretty rewarding feeling.
