The “Other” Pandemic That Is Exploding

I don’t think you’ll be surprised to hear that many people in America have been eating differently over the past 14 months. So much so, that according to the CDC, the obesity pandemic has been exploding. Between the anxiety, the loneliness, the boredom, and the feeling of “why bother to eat right when xyz is going on?”, Americans have been eating so badly that 42% of us are now obese.

In fact, one study showed that 42% of people reported gaining weight during the pandemic and the average amount was, get this….29 pounds! 10% even reported gaining over 50 pounds!

None of this comes as a surprise to me. When I was going through chemotherapy as a teen and had to quarantine for over 10 months (out of legitimate fear that I could die from any number of virus’ because of my severely weakened immune system), I gained a ton of weight too.

I don’t know the exact numbers but I estimate that it was around 30-40 pounds in the first 4-5 months. After that it was a much slower gain. This rapid weight gain even caused me to form stretch marks on both sides of my abdomen. By the grace of God, those stretch marks are now the last remaining signs of my old body, other than some loose skin!

One thing that I LOVED to consume LOTS of back in those days was sugar. I had a major sweet tooth and I couldn’t get enough. When the obesity stats came out recently, this article and video were released that explain how damaging sugar is to our body and to our weight.

I know ignorance seems like bliss, but ignorance doesn’t eliminate consequence, so I encourage you to be informed.

I hope you find these helpful! God bless you!

P.S. Did you know obesity is the second leading risk factor for death or serious illness from COVID-19? One study even found that 30% of hospitalizations from it were due primarily to obesity. This is serious stuff. I’m praying for you!
